Can you play Pass Defense with Kids?
Posted by Kailan on 27 Jul 2010 at 21:15:49    [1 comments]
Someone once said you can’t play pass defense with young guys in there, well after 6 games of the season the Bears are so far dispelling that myth as they have the 2nd best pass defense in the RDFL. Admittedly it’s early days yet but the Bears starting DB’s average just 27 starts each and 67 of those starts come from 5th year Strong Saftey Tyrus Lake. The three Cornerbacks who rotate the starting times include two rookies and a 2nd year guy. (Lewis Abel, Zack Stevens and Glen Hundley) and the Free Saftey Trent Hill is also just a second year guy and these guys are going to get better!

In the six games the Bears have played so far this season only two teams have made it past 200 yards passing and in that time they’ve conceded just 7 passing touchdowns while taking away 4 picks, Defensive Coordinator Archie Goodwin said “Yeah we only have 4 picks but more will come, these guys are learning to play together and as the groups cohesion grows the picks will come.” He went on to say “We’re mixing up our coverage in certain situations and that’s helping, the guys are also spending a lot of time in the film room, I’ve always preached if you know your opponent better than he does then half the battles won. I do expect them to have some bad games, there young and there learning and there are a lot of good Quarterbacks out there. But so far I can’t fault there performances and there aptitude.”

Goodwin later went on to say “The games changed somewhat in the last year or two and with it teams have had to adjust to be successful. I think maybe the biggest change in pass defense has been the immergence of the Safety. Think of it this way a Cornerback can only cover one guy, a Safety can cover everyone, especially if he plays zone coverage very well and obviously reads the flow of a play too. Guys have to be fitter as well, it’s no good having a stud in the secondary if he’s too exhausted to perform or even stay of the field especially in the 4th when it really matters.”

So next up for the Bears new secondary are the 4-2 Giants with awesome Tight End Joel Green. The Bears have yet to face a exceptional Tight End and it will be interesting to see how they deal with this new proposition.

[i:846fcd8487]Tumbleson prepares to throw another Touchdown for the Cavaliers![/i:846fcd8487]

The 6ft 3 232lbs Quarterback Daniel Tumberson of the Virginia Cavaliers broke just about every passing record the Atlantic Coast Conference has or may ever have in his final year. In just 12 games he racked up 47 TD’s and over 4000 yards which made him the hottest property going into the 2016 Draft. Not only does he throw TD’s for fun he gives very few picks away for someone so young. Mike London the Cavaliers Head Coach said of Tumblerson “People forget this kid is only 21, the leadership and maturity he shows is exceptional for some one of such few years. I have no doubt he’ll start from day one.” So what are Tumblesons attributes, well 1st he has a big arm, so he’ll stretch the field and give the Bears a big play threat immediately, also as we said early he does a great job of avoiding interceptions and ball security was a problem for the Bears passing game last year. He has good touch and reads the game very well, he’s also great on those big third down money plays when the pressure’s on. If there is an area he really will have to work on its learning the pro game, Bill Lazor the Cavaliers Offensive Coordinator ran a simple game plan the last 2 years so Tumbleson will need to learn new sets pretty quickly in Training Camp if he is to start on opening day.

Tumberson grew up in Danbury Connecticut but his middle class parents moved them 70 miles south west to New York when Daniel was just 5. Tumbleson grew up watching the Jets but modelled himself on the Bears Drew Brees and to some extent that old gunslinger Brett Favre. But it was the Raiders he followed, why well when asked Tumbleson said “I just love watching the old tapes of those guys sitting on there helmets and finding a way to win when the world was against them. They played hard but they worked hard, that’s how I like to be, a bit of a rebel I suppose. That’s not always been a good thing but hey that’s the way I am and that’s the way I’m gonna be”.

Bears General Manager Kailan said of Tumbleson, we really did not think we’d go Quarterback at 1.1 but when this guy came along we had to. Initially we thought of trading down and staying with Eugene Karp who as we know is more than a capable Quarterback. We got 5 or 6 offers but none we felt where near what Tumbleson is worth in our view. We feel Tumbleson is going to give us the chance to compete for the NFC North every year for 10 or more years, that’s priceless! Drafting Tumbleson does pose one very nice problem though. Are we going to be able to get the best out of HB Dennis Flint as I think we’re going to be passing a lot in Chicago for the next few seasons, Flint is a superstar in his own right so maybe it could be worth testing the market for him. Why you may ask, well that’s because it'S time for Tumbleson.

The Bears negotiating team where today locked in talks with Virginia Star Quarterback Daniel Tumbleson. We caught Bears Head Coach Chrrleo outside the bears training facility and here is what he had to say about the young Quarterback" If we take Tumblestone we could be looking at 10 wins or more a year for 10 or so years. I think we'd start him but not expect much from him in his 1st year or two." Caldwell was then asked what it would take for an organisation to get 1.1 from the Bears, Caldwell said " Alot, we're talking multiple 1sts i would think, i mean Tumblestone has the combine and bars to be the best QB in the league if handled correctly and that probably means lots of playoff places for us over the years, a Quarterback like him comes along once every 10 years so if anyone wants to get 1.1 from us there going to have to make one big offer"

6.9 Al Sons TE 15 51
6.15 Todd Mineo WR 23 34
7.8 Ellis Newman QB 12 50

1st look and we love our draft but camp can do funny things, Flint looks like being a monster especially as he is only 50% developed. We have 2 1sts, a 2nd and 2 x 3rds next year as well so Chicago looks like we could be in a pretty reasonable shape moving forward. I got a B- for my draft WTF
